Why Is Punjab's Education Minister Facing Resignation Demands?

Political controversy has intensified in Punjab after allegations of irregularities surfaced during a Pharmacy Officer recruitment examination. Opposition parties have demanded the resignation of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, arguing that accountability must be fixed for any lapses in the examination process.

The controversy began after a cheating racket was allegedly uncovered during a pharmacy recruitment examination conducted at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in Faridkot. Several candidates were found using Bluetooth-enabled devices and other electronic gadgets to cheat during the examination. Police subsequently launched an investigation and arrested multiple individuals linked to the alleged malpractice.

Opposition leaders have claimed that the incident reflects serious weaknesses in the state's examination system. Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and Shiromani Akali Dal leaders have all demanded answers from the Punjab government. They argue that accountability should be established for any examination-related irregularities.

The Punjab government, however, has strongly rejected allegations of a paper leak. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that not a single competitive examination paper has been leaked during the four-and-a-half years of the AAP government's tenure. According to him, the pharmacy examination controversy was a case of cheating rather than a paper leak.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains also addressed the issue through a video message on social media. He clarified that the pharmacy examination was not under his department and insisted that the matter involved cheating, not a leaked question paper. Bains emphasized that it was the government itself that detected the malpractice and initiated action against those responsible.

The minister further stated that he is prepared to take responsibility if it helps improve the education system. However, he maintained that the facts of the case do not support claims of a paper leak. According to him, opposition parties are attempting to portray the incident differently for political reasons.

Meanwhile, the political debate continues to intensify. Opposition parties maintain that the controversy affects the future of thousands of students and job aspirants, while the government insists that recruitment processes in Punjab are conducted strictly on merit and that any attempts at cheating are dealt with firmly.
