Keerthy Suresh Akka Series: Actress Says She Is Glad to Play a Lead Role in Netflix’s New Gangster Drama

Keerthy Suresh Akka Series: Actress Keerthy Suresh has opened up about her experience working on Akka, her upcoming Netflix series that brings together a distinctive fictional world, two powerful female characters and a gangster drama set in the 1980s. Speaking at the show's trailer launch in Mumbai on Thursday, the actor said she was immediately drawn to the project and wanted it to be the first of her Hindi-language projects to reach audiences. Produced by YRF Entertainment, Akka is written and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty, who makes his directorial debut with the series. The show also stars Radhika Apte and is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 30. Keerthy, who made her Hindi film debut with the 2024 Varun Dhawan-starrer Baby John, described Akka as a unique project that offered her an opportunity to explore an unfamiliar setting and a challenging character.

Keerthy Suresh Was Immediately Drawn to Akka

Speaking about what attracted her to the series, Keerthy highlighted its unusual world and the conflict between its two central female characters. “It is unique and a never-seen-before (world) and to see two women against each other. I’m so happy and glad I got to do this,” she said at the trailer launch. The actor added that Akka was the first Hindi project she had signed and that she had hoped it would be released before her other Hindi-language work. “This is the first project I signed in Hindi and I wanted this to come out first. But I’m glad I got to play a big part in it,” she said. Her comments reflect the importance of the series in her journey into Hindi-language entertainment, particularly as she takes on a prominent role in a story centred on women navigating a world shaped by power and conflict.

Understanding the Unusual World of Akka

Keerthy revealed that she needed time to understand the series' distinctive setting when director Dharmaraj Shetty first narrated the story to her. “When Dharama came to me to narrate Akka, I didn’t know what I was signing for. I heard the first episode and it took a while to understand the world because it is a unique world,” she explained. However, the story quickly convinced her to take on the project. “The minute I finished hearing the first episode, I was like, ‘I’m doing it’,” she added. Set in Pernuru, a fictional kingdom shaped by generations of women who built, governed and protected their territory, Akka explores a setting in which female characters occupy positions of authority. The series combines this unusual backdrop with the world of organised crime, creating a period gangster drama that places women at the centre of its narrative.

Dharmaraj Shetty Helped Shape Her Character

Keerthy also credited Shetty with making the process of developing her character easier. She explained that beginning work on a new role often involves uncertainty about where to start, which details to focus on and how to approach the character. “Every time you get into a new character, like I always have a starting trouble, like where do we start, what are the details, how do we go ahead about it, and Dharma made it easy,” she said. The actor added that preparing for Akka introduced her to a different working style. Her comments underline the collaborative nature of the project and the director's role in helping her understand the character and the fictional world surrounding it. For Shetty, the series is also an important professional milestone, marking his debut as a filmmaker.

Radhika Apte Joins the Cast of the Netflix Series

Alongside Keerthy, Akka features Radhika Apte, an actor known for taking on a variety of roles across film and streaming projects. The series' central premise, involving two women positioned against each other, is one of its defining elements. Combined with its 1980s setting and fictional kingdom, the story offers a different backdrop from many contemporary crime dramas. YRF Entertainment is producing the project, while Netflix will bring the series to audiences worldwide through its streaming platform.

Akka Set to Premiere on October 30

With its trailer released and the premiere date approaching, Akka is set to introduce viewers to a new fictional world built around women, power and crime. For Keerthy Suresh, the series represents an opportunity to take on a substantial Hindi-language role and explore a character that immediately caught her attention. Her enthusiasm for the project, along with Radhika Apte's presence and Shetty's directorial debut, has placed Akka among the upcoming streaming releases to watch. The series will premiere on Netflix on October 30, giving audiences a closer look at Pernuru and the story of the women who shape its world.
