Washington: A controversy has erupted in Texas over a 90-foot statue of Lord Hanuman after conservative YouTuber Jesse Hughes shared a photograph of the structure on X and wrote, “Btw, when we win, we are tearing this down.” The post drew strong reactions from members of the Hindu-American community and others.The statue, known as the Statue of Union, is located at the Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, Texas. The 90-foot statue was consecrated in August 2024 and has since become a prominent religious landmark for the Hindu community in the region.

Hindu-American Community Reacts

Hughes’ post was criticized by Ruchir Bakshi, a US Army veteran who identifies as an American Hindu. Bakshi described the remarks as a threat against Hinduism and questioned the idea of targeting another religious community’s place of worship.Bakshi said that religious differences should not become a reason to threaten or vandalize a place of worship. His comments received support from the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) and Texas-based political commentator Carl Wheless.The controversy has also renewed discussion about religious freedom and the treatment of Hindu Americans in the United States.
